News : Smarter Dimensions July 2009

Welcome to the Smarter Dimensions July 2009 Newsletter. To view this letter online visit http://www.smarterdimensions.com/News.html

Colbalt-Sky Launch Blog: If you did not already know, Colbalt-Sky have launched a blog that is currently talking about migration from Quantum to TOM. You are invited to add your own comments about your experiences and perhaps offer some help to some of the issues others have faced. There is also an RSS feed for this so you can the very latest feeds into your email. We have added the feed to the Dimensions Users and Quantum users groups in LinkedIN.

Poll Results: I don't think it is rocket science to work out that most users don't like the new name for the Dimensions Platform, but then who does like change? You never know, after a while it may just be rolling of the tongue. So what did people say, well you can see the full list of comments at the bottom of this email but here are a few of them.

Positives : I'm still not convinced by the non-acronym PASW but i think it makes sense for SPSS to create a more integrated offering under a single brand and a more unified architecture.
Identifies Data Collection as part of the PASW family of software solutions.
Negatives : The new name no longer relates itself to SPSS. It sounds like some software developed by software houses.
                   Confusing and hard to remember

CodeCorner: We are almost there with this one. We don't have a link yet for you, but we hope to launch this next month. The idea is that we have a store of generic code examples that you can use in your scripts, for example, if you wanted to connect to a database in your survey you will be able to go to the CodeCorner, login and find the code you need. Where needed there will be notes on how to get things working.

Subscriber Emails: Don't forget to check your subscriber details. Login to the website and see how you can change your settings. You may have noticed that the HTML version of the page that gets sent to you has a bug in it. We are talking to the developers about this.

Q: Do you like the New Name PASW Data Collection as a replacement for SPSS Dimensions ( Yes / No )

Poll Results Positives :

As a user of Dimension Net, I see many enhancements and changes.  These changes are partly due to my company's needs.  As far as I am concerned this is not the same Dimensions we started with.
This fits into the global idea behind the change. I don't really like the new name but we all will get used to it sometime. And then it's not better or worse as what we have now. So my real answer - that was not possible in the poll - would have been: Kind of yes.
I'm still not convinced by the non-acronym PASW but i think it makes sense for SPSS to create a more integrated offering under a single brand and a more unified architecture.
Identifies Data Collection as part of the PASW family of software solutions.
It's a consistent naming across the portfolio
New name gives clearer meaning of the product.
net refers to a group better than the previous one
Comprises more meaning than predecessor

Poll Results Negatives :

Well Dimensions has the ring to it .. ;)
I understand the umbrella name for analytics, but the name is very unwieldy.  "PASW Data Collection Author Professional" instead of "mrStudio"...seriously, who is going to call it that?  The rename needs to be something short & catchy or it won't take hold.
It is a non intuitve set of four alphabetics which tells you nothing unless you dig deeper...
anagrams are so yesterday
It's so ugly - why change?
it's not catchy, PASW!? how can you remember that?
The new name no longer relates itself to SPSS. It sounds like some software developed by software houses.
It is hard to say.   Who ever used the W in software in part of an acronym?
It's not a good acronym!
Same product - name doesn't do anything to change that.
It just doesn't roll off the tongue but I can see why SPSS has done it - it was confusing with all those different product names across the company before
worse still is that all the products have been renamed too
Difficult to pronounce
Too Long, the brand "Dimensions" had some meaning in the market, or at least for the guys & gals using it, while PASW reminds me of some terrible alphabet stew.
It's clunky. Data collections is not, in itself, Predictive. It's a big stretch I think.
Have you tried pronouncing it?
Confusing and hard to remember
Not memorable or catchy and why the need to change the name anyway
First, it doesn't make sense when you're trying to maintain brand identify.  Second, the fact that you have to explain it tells you that it doesn't resonate even with Dimensions users.  Third, it doesn't roll off the tongue. Fourth, does it signal a change in direction for the company?
It's a pretty poor acronym to try to say. Is it "pazwer" or "P-A-S-W"? Perhaps it could have spelt something more pronounceable - PAWS? (I know, makes no sense) Or just PA? Or PredAn? Oh well - we got used to saying SPSS so no doubt this will be rolling off our tongues in the near future!
It's an unpronouncable acronym
Difficult name.
Already a failure product , they are trying to adjust with new name
Used to Dimensions :)
Dimensions sounds like a brand name, PASW sounds like nothing.
It is very very long and have no really meaning.
Cannot pronounce Pazzwa
As the person responsible for implementing Dimensions, it was a bit depressing when the first 3 people that came to discuss the new name started basically the same way with ... "Do you like the new SPAZ data collection?". I have to admit, it is not much of a leap to get there and it will and has lowered the confidence in SPSS's reputation for quality. Another brilliant idea that has dribbled out and caused a mess.
I am not sure why SPSS insists on changing and rebranding things so frequently. I guess it is more the fact that they have changed it at all rather than the name.
Too long. SW = Soft Ware ? Two words ?? Come on !!! Product names are utterly ridiculous now.
Not Catchy. Can't Remember what PASW means.  They need to fix the problems especially in TOM/DMOM and worry less about what the name is
What does it actually mean?
It is too long and not at all catchy, and its suppost to appeal to marketing savvy folks who know about branding.
"One: it's not a fluid brand name. Reports for Surveys - as an application name? I know it's more discriptive but hardly flows off the tongue.
Two: it's introduced on version 5.6. I know SPSS's versioning system is overworked normally but shouldn't dimensions have a name change on a full version number like 6.0? or reset the count to 1.0?"
No idea what it means.  Takes "SPSS" cache' out of the equation.
no reference to SPSS..  What does it even stand for?  Hard to remember..  Dumb idea..  did they research this?
What a mouthful
i can't remember if it's paws or pasw, neither of which mean anything to me.
There's no "life" or "energy" in the name.  It's like rebranding Doritos to "Toasted corn mash with artifical orange coloring and flavor".
SPSS Dimensions seems to be define it better.
What a mouth full.
It's not pronouncable
does not sound good
Impossible to pronounce, and I liked the old 'Dimensions' name. It had dimension.
